Which islands did Greek and foreign tourists choose to vacation on August 15?


The Cyclades Islands this year, during the traditional Greek holiday around August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin Mary), were at the top of travelers' preferences.

Paros, Naxos, Mykonos, Santorini and Tinos were the islands that received the most passenger traffic, according to Ferryhopper bookings data from August 14 to 18, 2024. It is worth noting that while Santorini remained among the most popular, the destinations overall saw a relative decline in tourist traffic compared to last year.

Differences in preferences are observed between foreign and Greek travelers. In particular The Greeks preferred the following islands for their holidays:

Greek Gen Z and Millennials preferred: Naxos, Tinos, Paros, Syros and Crete. Compared to 2023, significant growth in tourist flow was observed in the following destinations: Lefkada (1124%), Kefalonia (665%), Skopelos (274%), Chania (130%), Ikaria (91%), Lesbos (80%).

Guests from the USA and France, Those who were actively present on the Greek islands this summer preferred: Paros, Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos and Milos. Based on the same data and traveler choices in 2024, there appears to be a trend towards travel to less touristy destinations. This is especially true for Greek travellers, with average booking costs up by -3%, demonstrating a trend towards more budget-friendly holidays.

In Northern Greece, the routes with the highest passenger traffic were: Kavala – Lemnos, Alexandroupoli – Samothrace, Volos – Skiathos, Mantoudi – Skopelos and Thessaloniki – Skopelos.

Finally, it is worth noting that on August 15 this year, passenger traffic also increased on routes between Greece and Turkey. In particular, activity was observed on the lines: Marmaris – Rhodes, Ayvali – Lesbos, Fethiye – Rhodes and Cesme – Chios.
