Scientists are watching seismic activity on Athos with caution

Scientists are closely monitoring the tremors in the area of Mount Athos on the Chalkidiki peninsula – they have been continuing for several weeks.

Professor of Geology at APΘ, seismologist Kostas Papazachos says:

“We are wary because the sequence has been going on for several weeks.”

The professor notes that there is very little information about the tectonic origin of this area, and “a stronger earthquake cannot be ruled out.”

Yesterday, August 12, at 4.26 and 4.39 p.m., two tremors of magnitude 4.1 and 4.2 on the Richter scale occurred, which were noticeable and accompanied by weaker ones. The epicenter of the first was located 11 kilometers west/northwest of Kari. The depth of the source was 14.1 kilometers. The epicenter of the second was recorded 11 kilometers east of Ouranoupolis, the depth of its source is estimated at 15 kilometers.

In recent days, intense seismic activity has been observed in the area of Mount Agios Oros. On Sunday, August 11, an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck Ouranoupolis. According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the earthquake occurred at 16:39 Greek time, 260 km north of Athens.
