The boat with tourists started to sink, and they had to swim to the shore

The adventure of tourists on the Greek island of Alonissos, fortunately, ended with a happy ending. Although who knows how it could have turned out…

On the morning of August 5, a private boat carrying a group of Australians to Alonissos began to take on water and sink near the port of Votsi. The tourists jumped into the sea and swam to the shore, which, fortunately, was not far away. As reported by onlarissa.gr, due to the heat, the bottom of the boat “warped” (cracked). Gaps formed through which water began to flow, the owner of the fragile vessel did not notice this in time.

The boat developed a leak and began to slowly sink. Fortunately, the vessel did not go far enough from the shore, and favorable weather conditions also helped the passengers on board to reach land safely.

Rescuers who were in the area and saw the “adventure” rushed to help. The coast guard was immediately mobilized. Port officers arrived on a patrol boat and notified the competent services about the need to pump out water and tow the boat. The owner of the sea vessel stated that he had been using the boat for some time and did not realize that it needed maintenance.

The port of Alonissos is continuing a preliminary investigation into what exactly happened, but no pollution of the marine environment was observed as a result of the incident.
