At least 64 illegal migrants are missing after a shipwreck off the coast of Calabria, in Italy's search and rescue zone in the Ionian Sea.
The missing, according to La Repubblica, are mainly from Afghanistan, Iran and Kurdistan. The Italian coast guard has been trying to find survivors since last night. The alarm was raised by French tourists on a private boat, who managed to rescue twelve shipwrecked people.
The rescued people were first transported to a merchant ship in the area, and a few hours later to the shore. One woman died shortly after the merchant ship arrived at Roccella Jonica in Calabria.
Italian coast guard aircraft are involved in the search for survivors.
