Nikolai Kobrinets, head of the pan-European cooperation department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, was found dead in his hotel room in the Taksim district of Istanbul.
How reports Turkish TV channel NTV, a top diplomat arrived in Istanbul for a meeting of ambassadors. When he didn’t show up for a meeting that morning, his colleagues tried to reach him by phone, but were unable to. The body was discovered by hotel staff.
Data from the preliminary investigation indicate that Kobrinets died of a heart attack. The body was taken to the morgue to determine the exact cause of death. Press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation confirmed death of Kobrinets, without specifying its cause.
In December 2016, police officer Mevlut Altintas mortally wounded Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov at a photo exhibition in Ankara. He was later eliminated at the scene.
