Hamas to Gazans: “Evacuate northern Gaza to be safe – we will fight the Israelis”

Tens of thousands of Palestinians are fleeing northern Gaza at the call of Hamas, which asks them to protect themselves and their families and retreat to the southern sector of the city while its fighters remain to fight the Israelis.

“If you care about yourself and your loved ones, travel south as directed. Rest assured that Hamas leaders have taken care of themselves and are seeking shelter from attacks in the area.” – said the statement, which called on civilians to use special evacuation routes to “safely” leave Gaza City.

“To ensure your safety, take advantage of the short period of time to move south – from Beit Hanoun to Khan Yunis”, says the message, which is accompanied by a map of the two routes. Hamas does not want civilians in the area, which it has sealed off in hundreds of locations in anticipation of an Israeli ground invasion.

Since yesterday evening, Israeli military units have begun to enter the northern sector of the city and are conducting offensive reconnaissance, as happens before the start of a main military operation.

Palestinians are rushing to flee northern Gaza after the Israeli military ordered about 1 million people to leave the territory’s south ahead of an expected ground invasion following a surprise attack a week ago by the ruling Hamas group.

A senior Hamas official said yesterday that the current situation in Gaza represents “an extremely brazen and brutal attempt to forcibly remove Palestinians from their land.”

Izzat al-Rishiq, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, said the organization “will not give up the legitimate struggle for freedom and self-determination”. “We will either live with our heads held high, or we will die fighting,” – he said.

At the same time, the Americans are negotiating with the Egyptians to accept thousands of Palestinians who will be forced to leave Gaza.

“Egypt and the US are close to reaching an agreement that will allow civilians from the Palestinian Gaza Strip to cross into Egyptian territory,” – says the Wall Street Journal, citing a senior Egyptian official. The deal, if reached, would reverse Egypt’s persistent refusal to allow humanitarian corridors to remove civilians from the Gaza Strip in previous days.

The Egyptian government has persistently rejected the Israeli army’s demands for the evacuation of the entire Palestinian population from the northern Gaza Strip, which it has called “a violation of international law and a threat to the lives of more than a million Palestinian civilians.”
