The ninth of February is the day of memory of the Greek poet Dionysius Solomos. Since 2017, this date has been celebrated as World Greek Language Day.

The statement of the General Secretariat of Foreign Hellenism, connected with the solemn date, says:

All festive events are aimed at highlighting the richness, beauty and timelessness of the Greek language, the fundamental role it has played for many centuries, thanks to its universal contribution to European and world culture.

As part of this year’s World Greek Language Day, Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Katsaniotis and the General Secretariat of Hellenism Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have created a short video that highlights Greek poetry from antiquity to the present day.

Through the lyrical lines of the great Greek authors, simply and touchingly, the universal greatness of the Greek spirit and the Greek soul, as the reproducing force of modern civilization, is anthologised, the statement notes. In the video “Greek in its Relevance… the Blending of the World”, young people from 23 countries around the world who are learning Greek “travel” through three millennia of Greek poetry.

The video will be posted today, 02/09/2023, on the website and in social networks Ministry of Foreign Affairs Greece, as well as foreign diplomatic bodies to promote the celebration of this year’s International Day of the Greek Language. It will be posted newsbeast.gr, and on the websites of foreign organizations, departments of the Greek language at universities, bodies for the study of the Greek language, philhellenic organizations and in the media – to spread the message of this especially important day for Hellenism more widely.
