On Thursday 26 January 2023, Greece’s first complex for the production of pharmaceutical cannabis products was inaugurated in Examilia in Corinth.
Tikun Europe, a subsidiary of the Israeli company Tikun Olam, has invested more than 40 million euros to set up a 6-hectare private facility with state-of-the-art hybrid greenhouses and a 30,000 sqm pharmaceutical complex. The plant can produce finished medicinal products from cannabis in various dosage forms.
Minister of Development and Investment Adonis Georgiadis, who called the opening of the enterprise “historic day”, noted that Greek patients would benefit from these products, despite the fact that cannabis “has a complicated history due to being a drug.” He added that it is “a product that we will be able to export all over Europe because this plant can do huge exports to all the major European countries.”
In his speech, the minister publicly acknowledged that Nikos Karanikas, former strategic planning adviser to SYRIZA-PS leader Alexis Tsipras, who was present at the event, was the first in Greece to propose legalization bill, production and marketing of medicinal cannabis. When Karanikas proposed, the Conservative minister criticized him for it.
