Greek products in supermarkets have become inaccessible to consumers. Feta is sold for 15 euros per kilogram, cheese (kaseri) for 20 euros and turkey for 18 euros.
These are products that are produced and packaged in Greece, but are very expensive for the consumer. In fact, consumers tell the ALPHA channel that in there has been a significant increase in prices in recent days on dairy products such as kaseri, the price of which “rose” on Thursday 26 January to 19.5 euros, while previously it cost 15 euros. It is also noted that over the past week there has been an increase in prices from 0.30 euros to 0.80 euros for Greek products such as yogurt, cream and natural juice.
Over the past year, the price of Greek yogurt has increased by 26.6%. In particular, a jar with 200 grams of yogurt is sold in Greece for 1.30 euros, in Spain for 0.90 euros, in Portugal for 1 euro. The cost of local (non-export) milk has also increased significantly. According to Eurostat data, Greek milk has risen in price by 26%. That is, 1 liter of milk costs 1.87 euros in Greece, 1.35 euros in Italy and 1.25 euros in France.
The consumer who called the TV also spoke about the problem rising prices for basic necessities. According to him, if initially he needed 20 euros to buy basic necessities in the supermarket, now he has to spend 30 euros.
Apostolos Rautopoulos, president of the Union of Greek Consumer Workers, spoke about milk prices in the newspaper Ύπαιθρος:One of the largest dairy companies with the largest market share now buys from farmers at a price reduced by 6 cents compared to last month. However, the price of this company’s milk not only did not fall, but also grew“.
“As for olive oil, it is proven that supermarket chains or producers have documents on purchases at lower prices (i.e. it is not justified why the rule is violated (and unfair profit is obvious). Let’s then fine them, if not it turns out differently,” said the Secretary General for Trade and Consumer Protection.According to the information, the price of olive oil increased by 21.7%.
According to Eurostat, Greek food prices rose by 15.6% year-on-year in December 2022, below the European Union average of 18.2% and below rich countries such as Germany, but also countries with similar characteristics (for example, Portugal). First of all, it is noted that until June 2022, food inflation in Greece was higher than the European average. The fact that since April we have double-digit and ever-increasing food inflation cannot but stupefy consumers, especially in a country where purchasing power is one of the lowest in EU.
According to Eurostat (comparison of price changes for basic foodstuffs over the past year), high price changes are detected, higher than the European average, on the products that Greece provides for itself and even exports. At the same time, meat products, such as lamb and goat meat, became more expensive in Greece than in other countries of Southern Europe, in particular, by 10.10% in Greece compared to 2.3% in Spain, 8.3% in Portugal and 9% in Italy. In fact, in May, the annual price increase in Greece amounted to 22.6% (compared to 14.6% in EU).
More significant price increases compared to Spain and Italy were recorded for cheese (25.2% in Greece versus 22.10% in Spain and 17.50% in Italy), while the European average was 26.90% .
