Over the past 20 years, 1,668 journalists have died around the world – sad statistics were published by Reporters Without Borders.
One in three died in Syria or Iraq, these countries are recognized as the most dangerous for representatives of the world media. In 2022 alone, 57 journalists died in the world, another 49 went missing, and more than half a thousand (533) ended up behind bars.
On the territory of Ukraine, during the fighting after the invasion of Russia, 8 representatives of the media were killed. Many lives have been claimed by conflict zones, however, as evidenced by Reporters Without Borders, some “peaceful” states turn out to be even more dangerous for the press. Most of all, journalists who investigate corruption schemes and the activities of organized criminal groups risk their lives. The most dangerous countries in this regard were Colombia, Mexico and Brazil.
Russia, noted in report, is considered the most dangerous European country for journalists. Journalists are systematically harassed and attacked there. France occupies one of the top lines in Western Europe, but got there because of the only attack by Islamists on the editorial office of “Charlie Hebdo” in 2015, when 12 journalists were killed.
