Food basket: how the program will work in reality. Examples

The “household basket”, introduced by the government as a means of providing the population with essential goods, is expected to come into effect at the end of the month.

Towards the end of October, the launch of the program in supermarkets is expected. Secretary General for Commerce Sotiris Anagnostopoulos explained how this would work in order to keep prices as low as possible.

He specified that to the list products were selected based on the volume of consumption in supermarkets, and the second key criterion is the demand for these products. “This means that no matter how much their price rises, consumers, unfortunately, cannot do without them. Therefore, if we want to help the population, we must focus mainly on these products,” added S. Anagnostopoulos. General The secretary of commerce, speaking to ERT today, gave some illustrative examples.

First example: if we have pasta number 6, which is recommended by a retail chain and has risen in price by 2% in one month, while the general category of pasta, tracked by the Hellenic Statistical Service, has risen in price by 5% in the same month, then it turns out that the consumer who bought a product from the “food basket” (with special labels on the packaging), will win in price by paying less. That is, only 2% was charged for goods in the “household basket”, and 5% for other products (for the average consumer).

Second example: Let’s say we have a package of spaghetti worth 1 euro. If the price of an average package of spaghetti as a whole in a month will be 1.10e, and the package received in the “home basket” from the enterprise will be 1.05. That is, the consumer will win 5 cents.

“We are trying to explain to the citizens that the new price will increase at a slower rate than for other products,” said Mr. Anagnostopoulos.
