Greece: "favorite car brands" hijackers

Greece is in 5th place in the table with 32 countries with the most car thefts in the world. But, as it turned out, thieves in Greece have a special love for certain models of transport.

According to the data, there are 227 thefts per 100,000 inhabitants in Greece. In first place is New Zealand with 1,171 thefts per 100,000 inhabitants. Next come: Uruguay with 558 thefts, Italy with 232 thefts and the US with 228 car thefts.

The difference between Greece and the US is impressive as it is only one car – 227 in Greece and 228 in the US per 100,000 inhabitants!

To the question asked by forensic experts “why are there so many car thefts in Greece, because today a stolen vehicle is difficult to sell and return to circulation in Greece or abroad (it is easy to detect today)”, the answer is: for parts.

The increased age of the fleet in our country (+14 years) has created a great need for cheap spare parts, which are in short supply due to many breakdowns and damage to old cars. And car owners clearly cannot afford new spare parts. Therefore, there is a great demand for stolen goods.

It is clear that it makes no sense to put brand new expensive spare parts on an old car, and in a car service they offer a compromise, offering used parts, obviously receiving a positive response from the car owner.

Thus, criminal organizations have been created, in which hijackers and car services are involved. Some make a request for a specific brand of car, while others “deliver it in the best possible way.”

The mournful expression of the “master” of the car service where you delivered your “driven horse”, and the words that you can hear from him are: “… I will try to find you a good, slightly used spare part so that you do not have to install a new, expensive one” .

Car thieves tend to target popular cars (of which quite a few were sold in Greece) and those for which spare parts are not easy to find. In some cases of car theft of a certain category, robbers approach the owner with an offer of a “ransom” for its return.

According to reports, according to the publication pelop.gr, the most preferred car by car thieves in Greece in recent years has been the Smart, mostly produced from 1998 to 2014 (they prefer the non-new, electric model because it has few mechanical parts). Please note that the Smart can be stolen especially easily and without being hacked on the street by simply lifting it onto a small platform…

As a second option, they prefer the Mini Cooper, especially the first generation (2006-2008). For the same reasons as Smart.
