Government to recruit 600 more guards for university police

The Greek Citizens’ Protection Ministry said on June 15 that it would hire 600 more officers to reinforce the police force on university campuses.

The 600 will be added to the 400 who completed their training last month and were due to take up their duties in early June. However, the schedule has been adjusted due to the pending decision of the State Council, as well as the fact that some universities have not yet installed the necessary turnstiles and CCTV cameras.

Currently, 400 special guards are assigned to police stations in Athens and Thessaloniki until they take up their duties on campus.

If the additional 600 are not deployed, they will be absorbed into police departments, which are experiencing severe understaffing problems.

Reportedly that the hiring of additional guards is necessary because the relevant government legislation sets the total strength of the university police at 1,000.

PS Until the State Council decides, the universities are unlikely to establish anything.
