The body of a teenager was found floating near the island of Heraclius (Small Cyclades) in the central Aegean Sea early Friday morning. It was wearing only a white blouse and was believed to have belonged to a teenager between the ages of 12 and 15.
The remains were discovered by the crew of a sailing yacht near Alimiya Bay. This was immediately reported to the port authorities of nearby Naxos, and the relevant services were put on alert. A private boat arrived at the scene with a rescuer from the ambulance service, reports cyclades24.gr. The body was recovered and taken to the Island Medical Center.
Because it was eaten by fish and was in a state of severe decay, police have not yet been able to determine the sex of the child, state broadcaster ERT reported. The body was transferred to the Piraeus mortuary on Saturday, where an autopsy is to be performed to determine the cause of death.
The Naxos Port Authority is conducting a preliminary investigation. According to the first assumptions, the teenager could be among those who went missing when two migrant boats sank off the islands of Paros and Folegandros for Christmas.
