What will Athens do after Germany closes its borders and cancels Schengen?

Following Germany's unilateral cancellation of the Schengen Agreement, Athens declares its determination not to allow the immigration problem facing Germany to become the Greek one, with our country returning as a “state of first choice for migrants”.

In this context, the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is forming alliances, trying at the October summit of Germany and those who support the free movement bloc within EUfind support.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis intends to once again convey to partners on October 17 in Brussels the need for solidarity and the conscientious implementation of the Agreement on Asylum and Migration (a document that the “27” countries agreed upon with such great difficulty and repeated negotiations).

Greece's position will report to the German Minister of the Interior and all his colleagues. Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Asylum, has been in Berlin since 16 September 2024 to participate in at the Conference on Security and Migration.

Mr Panagiotopoulos is expected to demand, in addition to respecting the Asylum and Migration Agreement, an increase in the return of migrants from Greece to Turkey, as well as increased European funding for the protection of state borders, which are the borders of Europe.

Amidst the meetings and rants of “smart heads”, Greece awaits the arrival of new caravans of migrants.

The day before, the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, traveled to Evros to oversee fence expansion projectsand for 150 border guards are planned to be hired to control flows in Rhodope and Kavala. «Evros is protected– said Mr. Chrysochoidis. – However Official Coast Guard data on flows into our country from the sea is worrying. The number of illegal migrants crossing the border has doubled since the beginning of the year and exceeded 12,000. But Frontex also reports a 39% increase in flows from Turkey to Greece in the first eight months of 2024.“.
