The Greek Red Cross sent about 50 tons of humanitarian aid to Ukraine on Tuesday, the third batch of emergency goods sent by Greece to the war-torn country.
“You cannot imagine how important it is that these essentials, and especially medical supplies, are delivered to the war zones,” Greek Civil Protection Minister Christos Stylianidis said in a press comment from the Hellenic Red Cross (HRC) warehouse where the trucks bound for Ukraine.
“The residents there have suffered severe damage to vital infrastructure such as electricity, water and gas supply lines, as well as, of course, widespread destruction of medical facilities, hospitals and so on,” added Antonis Avgerinos, head of the Greek Red Cross.
Avgerinos said that in addition to working with his counterpart in Ukraine, the GCC has sent nurses, medical volunteers and rescuers stationed there to the Romanian border to provide immediate medical assistance to displaced Ukrainians fleeing the hostilities.
“The situation is nightmarish and extremely heartbreaking as we see flows of women and children, especially many unaccompanied children,” he said, warning that minors traveling without parents or guardians are particularly at risk.
