New strain of coronavirus found in France

A previously unknown variant of SARS-CoV-2 was found on a traveler who returned to France from Cameroon.

After his return, he managed to “distribute” the virus to those in contact – at least 12 people in the south of France were infected. The tests revealed that they had an “atypical combination of mutations”, informs DW.

Scientists have just begun to study it, so there is almost no data yet. The new strain was designated B.1.640.2, and it was discovered by specialists from the Marseille Mediterranean Institute of Infectious Diseases. Their work is published on the MedRxiv portal. Scientists have discovered 46 mutations in the new version of the coronavirus. The preliminary study must be peer reviewed. The researchers do not exclude that the infectivity of B.1.640.2 may be higher than that of the previously known strains, but it is too early to say this.

Today, Omicron continues to dominate in France – it is he who is found in more than 60% of those infected.
