Mesolonghi: Four Roma handcuffed for secret excavations

The Messolonghi police have opened a case for violating the Antiquities Act against four Roma. The men were arrested at dawn today by officers from the Messolonghi Security Department after checking the car they were driving on the road from Ano Vasiliki to Messolonghi.

Gloves, shovels and other tools were found in the car, prompting police to launch an investigation.

As it turned out during the preliminary investigation, the arrested persons were conducting secret excavations in the vicinity of the chapel of Agia Triada Ano Vasiliki. This area falls under the legislation on the protection of monuments, as confirmed by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Aitoloakarnania.
