80-year-old suspect arrested for arson in Glika Nera

An 80-year-old man from Glik Nera, who is accused of four arson attacks on August 11, faces up to 20 years in prison.

About this, reports the publication newsbeast.gr, wrote yesterday in X the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias. He recalled that, according to the new Penal Code, the punishment for deliberate arsonists reaches 20 years in prison. Mr. Kikilias wrote:

“Last Sunday, while civil defense forces were fighting dozens of fires at a danger index of 5 (red) and shortly before the Megara fire and the big fire in Varnava broke out, three consecutive outbreaks occurred in Glyka Nera, and a fourth outbreak occurred a few hours later. Today, an 80-year-old man was arrested as the culprit, who will appear before the investigator tomorrow. I remind you that now, with the new Criminal Code, the punishment for deliberate arsonists reaches 20 years in prison.”

The man is in custody and will be brought to the Athens prosecutor's office on Sunday. He is accused of three fires that broke out simultaneously at around 1:30 p.m. in Glyka Nera, within 100 meters of each other, and another at 8:30 p.m. the same day.

According to the information, the man, who retired from the private sector (he owned a shop) and has no history of psychiatric problems, refuses to talk and has not admitted to his actions. Empty petrol cans were found in his car.

The fires were started by throwing a burning object (fabric or paper), and a Zippo lighter (open) was found in the last fire. The accused was identified from a video recording, which shows that he started the fire while driving. In particular, he slowed down and threw the burning object onto dry grass, writes CNN Greece.
