Bather hospitalized after stingray attack

A woman who was hospitalized after being attacked by a sea creature is being treated at Agrinio Hospital.

As reported by e-maistros.gr, the incident occurred on 11/07 at midday in the shallow waters of the busy Arapi beach, located near the Amfilochia Baths. The unfortunate bather was hit on the ankle by a stingray's tail, which was hiding in the sandy bottom of the shallow water (apparently the bather stepped on it).

The woman's screams brought vacationers running. One of the bathers provided her with first aid on the spot, after which the young woman's father immediately took her to the Agrinio hospital, where she is now undergoing treatment.

According to eyewitnesses, similar incidents occurred both on Arapi Beach and on neighboring beaches (Buka and others). It is on this beach, which is usually chosen by families with small children from the surrounding area, that there are no lifeguards or signs warning swimmers of the need to exercise special caution due to the presence of dangerous marine life in the water.

The spines of the stingray's tail, coated with poison, can cause death if the toxin gets into vital organs. not only unbearable pain, but even a heart attack.

When in danger, the stingray strikes with its tail like a whip. And very quickly and accurately. The tail bends more than 90 degrees. The stingray's spine looks like a jagged harpoon.
