Air-conditioned spaces for tourists open in Athens "salvation" from the heat


The Athens municipality, along with other mayors, has opened eight public air-conditioned spaces in different parts of the capital in response to warnings of impending hot days.

Eight so-called “friendship clubs” will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. starting Wednesday and continuing at least through Monday, when meteorologists expect temperatures to drop.

In order to protect the homeless from high temperatures, the outdoor work teams of the Athens Municipal Reception and Solidarity Centre (KYADA), consisting of social workers, nurses and psychologists, will continue their daily work throughout the heat wave, working outdoors in six shifts in the morning and evening, offering nutritious meals, bottles of cool water and basic necessities. At the same time, they will inform people about the air-conditioned spaces of the Municipality of Athens and the cool places of the city, providing useful information to protect themselves from the heat.
