Evia: tourists turned a paradise beach into a garbage hell


Tents blanketed one of Evia's most beautiful beaches over the weekend, angering locals who reacted sharply to what was described as a “health bomb” and a “garbage dump”.

The photographs became public knowledge and caused outrage. Hundreds of tents were set up along Thapsa Beach from June 22-24 as many Greeks decided to take advantage of free camping in an area that lacks adequate facilities. Thapsa beach in the municipality of Kimi Aliveri was literally filled with hundreds of tents, to the surprise of residents who saw one of the most beautiful places in their area turned into an informal… campsite, local media noted evima.gr.

Local residents are very concerned that the famous “blue lake”, one of the most beautiful places in Evia, is becoming a “garbage dump” as there are no regulations and specifications for setting up camping tents on the beach.

They have appealed to the competent authorities to look into the matter as the condition is a “health bomb” that disrupts daily life and harmonious existence, the report said.

Euboea has many beautiful beaches that are often used for free camping. Recent posts on websites have praised Thapsa Beach as “summer paradise 2 hours drive from Athens“, and this is the result: heaven has turned into hell, full of garbage and human excrement. Fortunately, the local authorities would need to help a little: install toilets, garbage cans and offer paid services to guests. Then instead of problems they would have profit. But, apparently, laziness outweighed all the supposed benefits…
