Four arrested for bombing a gas station in Piraeus and a liquor store in Kallithea


Greek police have made four arrests in connection with a bomb explosion near a gas station in Piraeus and a liquor store in Kallithea.

The explosion at the gas station in Omiridou Skilitsis in Piraeus was so powerful that it was heard even in Paleo Faliro. The fire brigade was called to the scene of the incident, but no intervention was required as there was no fire.

“Two people have been identified and arrested by the anti-extortion department for the explosion at a gas station on 8-3-2024 in Piraeus and two more people for the explosion at a liquor store on 12-3-2024 in Kallithea. All of them were arrested – on a case-by-case basis, depending on the circumstances – for resisting police and weapons and drug offenses. Those arrested have been sent to the relevant prosecutors.”

The bomb was placed on the wall separating the area from the gas station located to the side. There were cars parked in the area that were damaged. At the time of the explosion, the gas station was operating and employees were inside. Luckily no one was hurt.

After the explosion, the area was cordoned off by police, and traffic on Omiridou Skilitsis Street and adjacent streets was stopped. Police from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit are still at the scene searching for bomb remains.

According to preliminary data, authorities believe that the explosion was a “precautionary one.” There is also the possibility that the bomb was intended for someone parking in the area.

Explosion in Kallithea

Early on the morning of Monday, March 12, a strong explosion occurred in a liquor store in Kallithea on Lagoumitzis Street. It occurred shortly after 03:00 am and caused extensive material damage to the store. There are no reports of casualties.

The explosion was so strong that a parked car was thrown into the middle of the road, and, of course, it was completely destroyed. People from the explosive ordnance disposal unit were urgently sent to the scene.

“When I was sleeping, the window broke and I was covered in fragments. I saw open cabinets, all the glass in the attic was broken, and there was a burning smell. We ran downstairs and saw that all the windows were broken, people were coming and going,” – one of the local residents told MEGA.

According to another resident, “this liquor store belongs to the owner of a famous nightclub, which is located behind. They have blown it up in the past, about 8-10 years ago, I don’t remember exactly. And the damage was the same. They broke all the windows in my house and throughout the area It was a very loud explosion, even the building shook.”
