"Cigarette myth": nicotine does not calm down, but triggers stress mechanisms (video)


Experienced smokers justify their addiction to smoking by the “calming” effect of a cigarette. However, an oncologist of the highest category dispelled this myth.

Candidate of Medical Sciences Andrei Nefedov, a thoracic surgeon, claims that this is a mistaken opinion, tells BB.LV. According to the doctor, nicotine triggers stress mechanisms at the biological level:

“When nicotine enters the bloodstream, which happens quite quickly due to inhalation of the substance, it affects the areas of the brain responsible for the production of neurotransmitters (hypothalamus, pituitary gland) and the adrenal glands. Nicotine releases a special hormone in the brain that affects the adrenal glands, which in turn release cortisol, a stress hormone.”

However, the prevailing opinion about relaxation after smoking is partly based on scientific facts: nicotine releases dopamine (responsible for satisfaction), serotonin (responsible for joy) and norepinephrine (promotes quick decisions and wakefulness). But (!), the specialist notes, along with this effect, the stress factor immediately turns on.

In addition, nicotine causes addiction, leading to a deterioration in physical and emotional condition, which, in turn, provokes significant stress, says the oncologist:

“The positive emotional effect of nicotine is short-term, which is immediately replaced by the production of stress. In addition, nicotine is not only a psychoactive substance, but also a poison. Together with nicotine, more than 40 carcinogens enter the body, which primarily significantly harms the lungs. Therefore, smoking is a proven cause of lung cancer. And people with a smoking history of 30 years or more are at risk for this disease.”

The oncologist points out that it is necessary to undergo specialized studies – low-dose computed tomography. This method will allow detect lung cancer at an early stage, when its treatment will be most effective and save a person’s life. He says:

“It’s never too late to quit smoking, but it’s better to do it as soon as possible. The body will have time to recover, the lungs will work normally again. But it’s important not to delay. If a person is stressed, then it’s worth trying breathing techniques that replace the smoking habit. And if anxiety worsens quality of life, you should seek help from a specialist – a psychologist or psychotherapist. Changing negative attitudes significantly helps a person overcome negative life situations.”

The oncologist calls for a responsible attitude towards health in order to improve your life and help the body overcome stressful situations. The doctor also recommended that smokers give up this bad habit as soon as possible.
