The 5-day work week is a thing of the past: from July 1 "comes" 6 days! How will employees be paid?

While Europe is considering a 4-day work week, in Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis a 6-day work week comes into force on July 1!

In particular, the government introduced for the public sector, utilities, banks and the private sector 6th working day for permanently operating companies, organizations and farms that use a 5-day working week system. At the same time, employees will be paid an additional 40% of their daily salary for the sixth day, and if it is a holiday – 115%.

Georgiadis's Law

This is the activation of Article 25 of Law 5053/23 (the latest Georgiadis labor law, which, by ministerial decision -113169/7421/28/12/2023-, established the start of a six-day working week for those who work a five-day week from March 1, 2024). According to this decision, all the above-mentioned enterprises, in order to use the sixth day of the week, must initially and responsibly declare to PS ERGANI II that they belong to this category.

Employees' employment during an additional day cannot exceed 8 hours, and the employee cannot perform overtime work. The above-mentioned employers must include information about the maximum working hours for their employees, who will be working for the sixth day, in the application for the organization of working hours before the employees go to work.

Responsibilities

Employers of enterprises or holdings, which by their nature are not continuous, but can work 24 hours a day from Monday to Saturday with alternating shifts, and in which workers are employed on a five-day work week, so that in exceptional cases when the enterprise has an unexpectedly large workload, use the sixth day of the week, must initially and responsibly declare to PS ERGANI II that they belong to this category of enterprises.

Every time they want to use the sixth day of the week, in advance and in any case before employees go to work, declare in EWRS ERGANI II that the company or holding has a particularly heavy workload during this period. The specific condition of unexpected particularly high workload is subject to control by the competent labor inspection department.

Workers cannot work more than eight hours during an additional day. Overtime and overtime work are not permitted on this day. In case the work coincides with a Sunday or a public holiday, the employee receives an additional 40% and 75% of the premium, that is, a total of 115%. Working on the 6th day of one week does not give you a weekly rest day (day off) unless it coincides with a public holiday.

In cases where five-day night shifts (00:00-06:00) are established at enterprises or holdings, working the sixth day on the night shift is not allowed under any circumstances.

Examples

For example, an employee who works from Monday to Friday and in exceptional cases must work on Saturday in the same week will be paid an additional 40% for Saturday without providing an additional day of rest.

Another employee works Monday through Thursday, has a statutory day off on Friday and is scheduled to work on Saturday. On Saturday he will be paid his daily wage plus 30%, without being given an additional day of rest.

It is worth noting that, in addition to private companies, the 6th day can be used by employees of local authorities, utility companies, public service enterprises and other companies in the general sector associated with work serving the public.
