A participant in the Olympic Truce Road race has died


A participant in the Olympic Truce Road 50km race died near Ancient Olympia, where the flames for the Paris Games were lit on Tuesday. reports EPT.

Petros Karkaboulias lost consciousness at the end of the route, and the doctor accompanying the race and Red Cross volunteers began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. An ambulance arrived within minutes and the man was taken to nearby Archaea Olympia Hospital, but he died. 61-year-old Karkaboulias, when he fell behind the main group, was offered to cover the rest of the route by car, but he said that he would “continue at his own peril and risk.”

The race route ran from Ilida in the northwestern Peloponnese to Olympia. Head of the “Commonwealth of Olympia” Sofia Hintsiu reported Iilialive.gr that this is the first death in nine years of running a race that is not a competitive race. According to her, during the 9th turning point of the journey from the host city of the ancient Olympic Games of Ancient Elis to the site of their holding in Ancient Olympia, Karkaboulias lost consciousness. First aid was immediately provided to him by a doctor who, together with representatives of the Red Cross, began performing artificial respiration. An ambulance rushed immediately and took him to the Ancient Olympia Medical Center. Unfortunately, despite persistent attempts by doctors, they were unable to save his life.

Shocked by the tragic event, Olympia Sympolithia President Sofia Hintziu said ilialive.gr. “We are all very shocked. I did not know the runner personally because, as you know, the number of participants is in the hundreds. We always accompany runners in the car to take them on the bus if they cannot continue. The guys in the car saw that the runner was a little fell behind, it seemed he was not feeling well. They told him about this and insisted on taking him into the car, but he did not want to give up the route. He answered them: “I will continue at my own risk.” Soon after, he lost consciousness. He was immediately given first aid. No time was lost. The ambulance arrived literally two minutes later, he was taken to the clinic, but, unfortunately, he died… We are all shocked. On April 16, as reported by the Athens News, in ancient Olympia, a fire was lit Olympic Games 2024, which will be held in Paris this summer.
