Tourism: artificial intelligence to help


Artificial intelligence (AI) may become an unexpected “ally” in increasing tourist flow to Greece.

According to scientists, AI, and even more so GenAI (generative artificial intelligence), can help our country attract even more tourists by solving problems such as translation and personalized experiences, as well as encouraging them to discover new destinations and the hidden beauties of the Mediterranean country.

According to a recent survey by Choose Strategic Communication Partners, one of the largest strategic communications, digital transformation and consulting firms in Greece, AI could become an important “ally.”

The survey, which was conducted among the five largest markets attracting tourists to Greece (UK, France, Italy, US and Germany) with people who have visited or indicated an intention to visit the country in the near future for a holiday, showed that 64.5% are familiar with the concept artificial intelligence. 60% expressed a willingness to use applications and tools that use artificial intelligence, both for planning a trip and during their stay in Greece.

“Help with automatic translation” came first. This is followed by the formation of an individual program of excursions and sightseeing, as well as meals (catering, choice of dishes). Depending on the benefits of the respective artificial intelligence application, a very large percentage of tourists appear to I’m even willing to pay to use an “automatic translator” during my visit to Greece.

In the question of which applications foreign guests want to use in our country, according to the study, the most popular AI travel applications are: real-time translation and language support (46.4%), personalized recommendations for tourist attractions, restaurants and others activities (24.8%), assistance in navigation and transportation (18%). The biggest challenges faced by those visiting Greece are:

  • lack of knowledge of the language, communication, misunderstanding (60%)
  • problem with finding useful tourist information (16.8%),
  • searching for affordable entertainment and housing (17.7%).

No less interesting is the fact that visitors are even willing to pay for such applications and services (36.9%). In addition, one in three (32.3%) responded that they were willing to pay partially, depending on the functions that these applications offer.

Tourists agree that AI can make travel information more accessible (30.7%), make it easier to book attractions and activities (29%), provide more personalized recommendations (24.3%), and improve transportation options for visitors (15 ,4%).

An important element for our country, which seeks to expand the destinations preferred by foreign tourists, is that survey participants answered: AI can help them discover unknown and interesting places (29.7%). Because this can make it easier for them to plan and implement a trip to our country (27.8%), as well as make the experience more personal and enjoyable (25.2%).
