Greece: Minister of Citizen Protection promises 3+1 measures to combat domestic violence after Kyriaki's death

New measures on domestic violence, with immediate implementation, are promised by the Greek government after the murder of Kyriaki Griva near a police station. What are you planning to do?

Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis announced the adoption of the new 3+1 measure, holding an online meeting with three thousand police officers after brutal murder near the AT Ag building. Anargyros. He talked about a series of mistakes made and gave new instructions. One of the most discussed was the question of where to take a victim of domestic violence at night, when many institutions are closed. Accommodation expenses will be covered by the Hellenic Police Headquarters. The minister stressed that the main task is to protect victims of domestic violence, improve the management of these incidents and find potential perpetrators. According to available information, ΕΛ.ΑΣ. will adopt the following measures in the fight against domestic violence, writes CNN Greece:

  1. Providing transportation and placing the victim in a safe place.
  2. Distribution of the “Panic Button” throughout the country.
  3. Centralized monitoring of complaints about incidents.
  4. Weekly report.

Greek police spokeswoman Constance Dimoglidou spoke about the murder in Ag. Anargyros and the police mistakes that led to the tragedy. Regarding the duty officer's statement that “A patrol car is not a taxi”which Kyriakos Mitsotakis also condemned in his speech at the ND Congress, Ms. Dimoglidou emphasized:

“A patrol car is also a taxi when someone needs help. Here we talked together about a police officer who put a child who was essentially dead into a patrol car, took him to the hospital and kept him alive. A patrol car becomes any vehicle when citizens need help.”

Kiriaki's father complained that no one from the police informed him of his daughter's death near Anargyros police station, and the day after the murder he went to the station in his work clothes as soon as he found it. After what happened, he was not even allowed to enter the police station and meet the officer on duty to confirm that it was his daughter who was indeed the victim of an attack a few meters from the police station. In response, Ms. Dimoglidou said:

“Police contacted the father because it was difficult to find information about the mother. The head of ΓΑΔΑ called him and expressed his condolences. The murder of a girl near a police station is tragic for us. It was difficult to find contact information. The friend who accompanied the victim was unable to provide us with information about the girl's parents. We found evidence of the father the other morning.”

According to her, no one expelled her father from the police department, but he was sent to another service, since the preliminary investigation into the murder was not carried out by the Ag Police Department. Anargyros. She further said:

“The anger and indignation in this case on the part of both her parents and loved ones is understandable. I’m not here to justify the police, but we shouldn’t unfairly equate all police officers (δεν πρέπει να βάζουμε όλους στο ίδιο τσουβάλι).”

A day after the family said goodbye to the murdered Kiriaki, the parents broke their silence, unable to come to terms with the fact that the child left them, dying at the hands of her ex-partner, practically next to the police station where the girl should have felt safe. Father says:

“My daughter told them she wanted a police car because she was in danger from her ex-partner and they said, 'Do you want a police car for your ex? Shame on how the cop reacted. The legislation must be changed and those who are not suitable should not work there. An officer at the scene of the incident can be heard saying on his cell phone: “Guys, what’s going on now?” He didn't even know the whole procedure. Deadly mistakes, tragic. The government that rules our Greece would make me proud if my daughter were the last victim.”

“This will haunt me for the rest of my life,” Kiriaki's mother said. Trying to overcome her grief, she criticized the brutal murder of her child. In a conversation with journalists, she wanted to appeal to all women who have been abused by their partners. “Why can men change us like shirts, and when we say no, they rape us, beat us, kill us,” she said, bursting into tears.

She asks for life imprisonment for the perpetrators of such crimes and asks why women cannot demand the obvious and fair from the authorities:

“That bastard didn’t have the courage to look my girl in the eye and kill her. He did it covertly, he stabbed him in the back. My whole life was about my children. Why did he devastate her? Because she told him no and wanted to leave him? I can't believe what he did to my daughter. That 'ah' she said when she died will haunt me for the rest of my life.”

Addressing the police officers to whom her daughter turned for help, the woman said bitterly: “This policeman who saw my daughter was afraid of breaking some kind of protocol. Take off your uniform for a minute! She asked you for help, become a person for a minute, talk to her, show interest, calm her down.”
