Murder of Kiriaki Griva: the government realized that the police would have to be retrained

The way the police dealt with Kiriaki Griva, who was killed by her ex-boyfriend right outside the Ag police station. Anargyros, brought to the surface the problem of the low level of training of law enforcement officers and their ignorance (or even lack) of rules and procedures for various situations.

Civil Defense Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis called an emergency meeting of generals, senior and senior officers in Katehaki. The teleconference is held in parallel with the personal meeting of officers ELAS with Michalis Chrysochoidis so that the minister could tell them the obvious. The mishandling of the Kyriaki Griva case has highlighted the structural problems in frontline policing.

Today, Friday, from 10.00 at the headquarters of the National Police on Katehaki Avenue, a wide meeting began on the topic “Domestic violence – the new protocol.” It is chaired by Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis and four Lieutenant Generals of Police, the head of GADA and the head of the Department for Combating Domestic Violence. All regional directors general of the country, commanders of police departments and acting officers of police departments are also participating in the teleconference.

The composition of the meeting alone suggests that the Ministry of Civil Protection is trying to inform employees – through commanders – of the responsibilities for handling incidents of domestic violence.

What happened at the Agios Anargyros police station demonstrates exactly this: that no police officer was prepared for the form of social violence that has reached horrific proportions since the end of the pandemic. It seems that the police still have not realized that in recent years…Something had changed in the “psyche” of society, and as a result, unpleasant surprises awaited them.

Tough times call for professionalism, that is, people who know and follow realistic procedures. It sounds simple as a phrase, but to bring it to life, you need to work hard and practice for many hours.

Particular attention must be paid to the actions and special training that officers on duty must undergo under the weight of revelations about what happened at Agios Anargyros police station. It is even expected that the new action protocol will be sent to police services throughout the country. Something similar has already been done in 2021, but, as it became clear from the result, it was “an empty shock.”

The incident highlighted a picture of chaos and indifference in the police force at a time when, in theory, there should be a picture of recovery following measures announced by Citizen Protection Minister Michael Chrysochoides to strengthen police forces.

However, even without any serious preparation, in order to keep Kiriaki Griva in the police station and save her life, it was necessary just use common sense and at least a small desire to serve those you swore an oath to protect, and nothing else…
