Greek frigate "HYDRA" attacked two Houthi drones in the Red Sea

At dawn on Wednesday (13/03), the Greek frigate HYDRA carried out its first combat operation in the Red Sea, as part of the protection of a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden, firing at two Houthi drones.

“On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, early in the morning in the Gulf of Aden, the frigate HYDRA, as part of Operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, while providing protection to a merchant ship, fired a gun at two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which were destroyed. The frigate continues to carry out its mission as usual”.

However, while the decision to have a Greek frigate participate in Allied operations in the Red Sea is geopolitically correct, there is a lack of weapons and mainly a lack of sensors to detect incoming threats in the form of small kamikaze UAVs (small offensive drones or hovering munitions) or anti-ship missiles, which, will probably be aimed not at a frigate, but at a merchant ship, for example, at a distance of 10 miles.

Two days earlier, “in strict secrecy,” the frigate HYDRA was visited by Greece’s Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias, Greek public television ERT reported. He was accompanied by the Chief of the General Staff of National Defense, Dimitrios Khoupis, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Navy, Dimitrios Eleftherios Kataras.
