The mayor of Sintika, Georgios Tatsios, commented on the “revival of traffic” in the municipality of Serres following the commissioning of the Zheleznitsa tunnel in the city of Blagoevgrad (southwest Bulgaria), describing it as “an excellent opportunity for the municipality.”
Let us remind you that the recently opened Zheleznitsa tunnel is a new road link connecting Western and Central Europe with Greece. Its length is 2 km. The road section is part of the Struma motorway and connects Sofia with Thessaloniki, as well as with the Pan-European Corridor IV. A specific project in a neighboring country improves road safety and reduces travel time.
“Improving the road network in Bulgaria will be an important factor for unimpeded access for the thousands of visitors who pass through the Promakhony checkpoint every day. Sintiki, as the host municipality, is in a prime position to take advantage of the increased traffic resulting from the operation of the tunnel,” said Sintiki Mayor G. Tatsios.
Construction of the double tunnel “Zheleznitsa” started at the end of 2019. The road section is equipped intelligent control systemhas four pedestrian crossings, as well as infrastructure for the passage of ambulances, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles.
This is one of the most modern projects in the neighboring country. Its cost was 120 million euros.
