A nightmare from the past for thousands of taxpayers

There are quite a few cases where amendments concern taxpayers who are no longer alive, as a result of which their next of kin are asked to settle outstanding issues…

These days, tens of thousands of taxpayers are faced with “skeletons in the closet” from the past, whom tax authorities are asking to begin adjusting declarations even for the distant 2013, for amounts received from various sources (mainly salaries and pensions), which are mostly reported cases they were not even notified.

The second update in a row that arrived in their email clearly states the following: “If you do not file the required corrective returns by 03/01/2024, the IRS will take the necessary steps to determine your tax liability, issue appropriate actions and impose the prescribed penalties.”

Information and clarification on this update can be found on the website: anadromika.aade.gr“. This was preceded by a message from the Independent Directorate of Revenue (AADE) that The tax administration is going to issue the relevant acts and impose the prescribed fines on retroactive amounts collected more than ten years ago.

In this regard, the tax department clarified that “in the case of filing returns for 2014 (the year of filing the original return for 2015), as well as in exceptional cases where the original or previous corrective return has been cleared by the tax authority or in the event of impossibility of filing electronically, the return is submitted exclusively to the competent tax authority with enclosing the necessary supporting documents and any relevant evidence.”

Most taxpayers are in a position…a nervous breakdown not just because of the bill they owe pay retroactively and even with a substantial late fee, but mainly because for many years they did not have any personal information about the obligation to file corrective returns.

The problem begins with employers and social insurance funds that calculated retroactive payments (mostly small amounts) with a delay of several years without informing the tax authorities in time, resulting in these amounts not being included in the income declarations pre-filled by the tax authorities at that time .

It is not uncommon for amendments to affect taxpayers who are no longer alive, resulting in their next of kin being asked to settle outstanding issues.

Even more surprising are those who have not registered their personal email address through the myAADE platform (in their tax contact details) to receive notifications. In this case, all information messages sent out by the Independent State Tax Service remain unread in the Taxisnet personal mailbox, which no employee or pensioner visits regularly throughout the year, except in cases where reporting deadlines are approaching, and especially in the spring – income statements E1.
