Shock: 95% of children use the Internet from mobile devices. Link to bullying

Interesting facts about the use of mobile phones by children and adolescents, as well as how this is related to the aggressive behavior of minors, were presented in a television interview by the head of “Δίωξης Ηλεκτρονικού Εγκλήματος” Vasilis Papakostas.

In a conversation with ERT about the role of social networks in juvenile crime, Mr. Papakostas focused on the fact that “95% of children who access various chat rooms and applications access the network from their mobile phone.” A fact which he said shows that “there is ease of access in terms of this activity.” “We must teach our children not to remain observers,” says the expert.

Referring to videos of violence (bullying) that schoolchildren upload to their social media accounts, he explained that “they like them.” According to the director of the prosecutor’s office for combating cybercrime, “it is very alarming that they are observing aggressive behavior on distance”.

1/3 of the minors surveyed had seen materials about sexual violence against peers. And they didn’t do anything, didn’t tell anyone. Stayed on the sidelines (taken for granted?).

“When we talk about bullying, it means that there is a victim, an aggressor and an observer. We must teach our children to be more active, and not remain mere observers of what is happening. Let us also understand that we should not condone their behavior when they like horrific posts,” Mr. Papakostas said.

Commenting on the fact that As the age of children at risk for delinquency begins to decline, he noted that “there is a link with children also having access to mobile phones at an earlier age.” According to the director of the prosecutor’s office, the criminal may be a minor, but the victim who needs to be protected is also a minor. At the same time, those who slander (humiliate, bully) on the Internet must be found and punished.

“In 2023, cases were initiated against 30 minors. And here there is also the responsibility of the parent, who is also held accountable, in most cases for neglecting supervision of the minor,” the expert noted. Mr. Papakostas emphasized that strangers communicate with our children, to limit which we need to install a parental control program.

And, as a 2023 study found, 1/3 of the children participating were viewed materials about child sexual abuse without meaning to. In addition, “17% of the children who took part in the study were subjected to some form of harassment. But the most important thing is that 34% of the children did not mention this anywhere,” he emphasized, saying that this shows us we need to build trusting relationships with our children.
