32.7 million tourists visited Greece in 2023. Revenues reached 20.5 billion euros

More than 32.7 million tourists visited Greece in 2023, breaking another record. Tourism revenues amounted to 20.5 billion euros.

According to Bank of Greece data published on Wednesday 21 February, tourism receipts increased by 15.7% compared to 2022 and amounted to 20,459.5 billion euros.

This development of events is due increase in revenues from residents of EU-27 countries by 11.5%which amounted to 11,158.3 million euros, as well as revenues from residents of countries outside the EU-27, by 18.5%, amounting to 8.591 billion euros.

In particular, receipts from residents of eurozone countries amounted to 9058.9 billion euros, an increase of 12.4%, and receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the eurozone increased by 7.8% and amounted to 2.099 billion euros.

Receipts from Germany increased by 9.5% to 3.563 billion euros, and receipts from France increased by 11.6% to 1.425 billion euros.

From non-EU27 countries: UK receipts increased by 5.8% to €3.307 billion and US receipts increased by 14.0% to €3.307 billion. Finally, receipts from Russia decreased by 20.8% and amounted to 32.8 million euros.

As for the tourist flow, it increased by 17.6% and amounted to 32.7 million travelers compared to 27.8 million travelers in 2022. In particular, tourist flow through airports increased by 12.7%, and through automobile border checkpoints – by 34.9%.

Tourist flow from EU-27 countries amounted to 19.65 million travelersan increase of 15.6% compared to 2022, while tourist flows from non-EU27 countries increased by 20.8% and amounted to 13.01 million travelers. Traveler flows from eurozone countries increased by 11.5%, as well as from EU-27 countries outside the eurozone, which increased by 24.4%.

Tourist traffic from Germany increased by 9.5% and reached 4.7 million travelers, and from France – by 4.2% and reached 1.831 million travelers. As for countries outside the EU27, tourist traffic from the UK increased by 2.4%, to 4.5 million travelers, and from the US, which increased by 29.2%, to 1.4 million travelers. Finally, the tourist flow from Russia decreased by 1.0% and amounted to 35.7 thousand travelers.

In 2023 the number incoming travelers increased by 17.6% and amounted to 32,735.2 thousand people (2022: 27,835.5 thousand people). In particular, the flow of travelers through airports increased by 12.7%, and through automobile checkpoints – by 34.9%. The number of travelers from EU27 countries increased by 15.6% compared to the previous year and amounted to 19,640.9 thousand, while the number of travelers from non-EU27 countries increased by 20.8% to 13,094.2 thousand . The Bank of Greece noted that the flow of incoming travelers does not include cruise passengers other than those registered at border control.
