The construction of a four-lane railway corridor with underground in the Sepolia area was visited by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in charge of infrastructure, Nikos Tahiaos.
As the official stated, “this is a very important project that will modernize the area and improve the movement of citizens. The project will be ready in the first half of 2025.”
The Deputy Minister, accompanied by ERGOSE Managing Director Christos Palios, inspected the construction work in selected areas of the project. Competent representatives of ERGOSE and the construction company informed him about the progress of the project – the progress of the work has reached 40%.
The challenges that will have to be faced to complete the tunnel were also discussed. At the same time, excavations are being carried out (in connection with the discovery of archaeological objects).
We are talking about the construction of a four-lane railway corridor 2.36 km long, of which 1.91 km are deepened under the road surface (essentially being a tunnel). The path segment (entrance to the tunnel) starts from Σ.Σ. Αθηνών and Θεσαλλονίκη (ΧΘ 10+821) and ends in the Τρεις Γέφυρες (ΧΘ 13+181) area of Sepolia.
The new railway line, which will be double-track, will expand the existing traffic area. First, the western corridor will be completed, which will serve the movement of long-distance trains, and then the eastern one, for commuter trains.
Doubling the railway lines will significantly facilitate the movement of trains: the travel time of routes will be reduced and their number will increase. Above the tunnel, the communication of 9 vertical streets will be restored, which are currently blocked due to work being carried out in this area. The project is expected to improve road and rail safety in the city center.
With the completion of the project, the quality of life of residents who currently suffer from train noise will be improved and they will be able to enjoy the recreational areas that will be created on the surface (above the tunnel).
