“No farmers, no food”: empty shelves in supermarkets in Belgium, France and Luxembourg


Consumers in Belgium, Luxembourg and France are looking for fresh vegetables, fruit and dairy products… But supermarket shelves remain empty, forcing shoppers to leave without a meal.

The wave of farmers’ strikes, which has gradually spread to many European countries, protests against politics EU: rising prices for fuel, raw materials and fertilizers, reducing purchase prices of products, reducing subsidies and assistance to Ukraine.

In Brussels, where the services of the European Parliament are located, on February 1 they “woke up” to the fact that it was “besieged” by 1000 tractors. Farmers lit fires, threw stones and other objects, and police were present to quell the demonstrations. The unrest has disrupted not only agricultural production but also the transport sector, which plays a key role in the delivery of goods. As a result, the entire supply chain has come to a standstill, affecting the economy of the region as a whole.

Farmers have adopted the slogan: “No farmers, no food” and now all you have to do is surf the internet and social media to see images and videos of empty shelves in Belgium, Luxembourg and France.

Lidl Luxembourg representative Julien Vatier told RTL that there is a serious shortage of fresh food in the country. Lidl’s Grand Duchy branches are supplied from the company’s Belgian distribution centers and store shelves have been bare in recent days as trucks were unable to make deliveries.
