The forecasts of Greek meteorologists, who spread panic rumors about the scale of snowfall due to the arrival of Cyclone Dawn, this time turned out to be incorrect, which led to a violent reaction on social networks.
Social media users renamed the cyclone “Dawn” to “Black Midnight” “in honor of the ignorance and “mediocrity” of most of them”. Indeed, because of this forecast, many enterprises suspended their work, schools were closed, which ultimately led to large financial and reputational losses.
Why didn’t there snow in Attica except in the mountains (where snow falls every winter)? Because, despite the existence of objective meteorological data for snow to fall, it simply… did not fall.
Meteorologists are always to blame
The terrible thing is that when such fairly harmless (but extreme for the Greeks) weather events occur, such as rain, downpour and (oh horror) snow, everyone suddenly panics. And if the forecast (and modern science has never learned to give a 100% correct forecast) does not come true, everyone attacks the meteorologists. As well as in other cases when meteorologists may incorrectly predict any deterioration in the weather.
The average person does not understand that even the word “forecast” is not an indication, but only an assumption with a certain degree of probability based on modern (alas, not complete) knowledge of weather processes. Like betting on sports, beloved by the Greeks, or analogues of Sportloto.
The meteorologists’ current failure has been followed by intense trolling on social media, which has proven to be the perfect outlet for the anger of citizens who are laughing when they should be crying at the mess in the state that they themselves allow to exist.
