Five reasons why you shouldn’t throw away banana peels

A medium banana contains 102 calories, 17% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and 3 grams of plant fiber. It also contains 27 g of carbohydrates, 422 mcg of potassium and 14 g of sugar.

This is one of the favorite fruits of athletes. And the reasons are known, at least as far as the inside of the banana is concerned. What do you know about its peel? Usually we do this mechanically: we peel the banana, eat it, and then throw away the peel. Well, in vain! Because it can be very useful. For example:

  1. You can eat it (!)
In many parts of the world, banana peels are used in cooking. And it’s actually a particularly nutritious ingredient. “It contains high levels of vitamins B6 and B12, as well as magnesium and potassium. It also contains fiber and protein,” says nutritionist Laura Flores. If the peel is washed in hot water and allowed to soften, it can be used as an ingredient in many dishes and soups.
  2. Makes meat tender
Even if you don’t want to eat banana peels, they can be useful when cooking meat. Just before placing the meat in the pan or oven, place a banana peel underneath. It will not allow the meat to “dry out” and will make it incredibly soft.
  3. Will relieve pain
A study published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand found that banana peel extracts have anti-inflammatory properties. This may be why some people say that applying the peel to an insect bite, rash or sunburn will provide immediate relief.
  4. Cleans shoes
Potassium, which bananas are famous for, is a key ingredient in shoe polish, meaning banana peels can be used to clean shoes. Rub banana peel onto your shoes and then dry with a paper towel. Oh, oh miracle! Your boots will instantly shine without the use of any harmful chemicals.
  5. Useful for the garden
Gardeners tend to use banana peels for a variety of reasons. Digging into the soil (as a fertilizer) will provide nutrients to your plants and also prevent the growth of pesky weeds.
