Corinth Canal: military weapons found

Today, January 20 at noon, the 2nd Port Department of the Corinth Canal Port Authority was informed by a private individual about the discovery of ammunition in the Kalamaki sea area.

The Corinth Canal opened on June 1, 2023, after extensive work. It was available for shipping from 1 June 2023 to 30 September 2023. From October 1 work has entered its final stage and it is assumed that in February 2024 Corinth Canal will return to normal operation.

According to the initial assessment, the WWII mortar is believed to be in a state of severe oxidation. He was found about 25 meters from the shore, at a depth of about 1.8 meters.

The Directorate of the Isthmian Port of the Isthmus of Corinth has informed the competent services, which will inform about the necessary further actions.

As Athens News previously wrote, work on installing underwater supports that will form the new channel of the canal continues. The images captured by Up Stories using a special drone with a powerful telephoto lens (zoom) are truly impressive, as the size of the entire project is huge and has a high degree of complexity.
