Mitsotakis demanded strengthening of anti-Russian sanctions

The Russian economy turned out to be more resistant to sanctions than the West thought, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a conversation with the editor-in-chief of the magazine Foreign Policy Ravi Agrawal at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

“As far as sanctions are concerned, the Russian economy has turned out to be more resilient to them than we thought. But this does not mean that Russia has not paid a big price as far as the economy is concerned. And I think that an economy at war essentially loses long-term opportunities that Russia will have to return to the path of stable development,” – Mitsotakis said.

“That’s why we insist on these sanctions. This is the only financial tool we have at our disposal, and we must make more efforts and do more to make these sanctions work.” – said the Greek Prime Minister.

The presenter asked about Greek ships, which, despite sanctions, transport Russian oil, which complicates attempts to limit Russia’s income. “It was very important for us to contact the Greek shipowners and say that they must comply with international sanctions in good faith. And I think they have done that,” – Mitsotakis said. He also announced his intention to continue to support Ukraine.
