With the votes of SYRIZA and PASOK, Parliament will allow the adoption of children by LGBT couples

The government is preparing to allow the adoption of children by LGBT couples, banking on the votes of MPs from SYRIZA and PASOK.

It is worth noting that the legalization of marriage between LGBT people is a formality, since LGBT couples have already received this right civil partnership agreement valid since 2015but it is necessary in order to be able to adopt children. Thus, we are not talking about marriage, but about the adoption of children by LGBT couples.

After two days of meetings in Piraeus at the mansion Megaro Maxim a clear picture has emerged of how the “blue” deputies will act, who in any case are ready to vote in dozens against the bill of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Among the dissenters who will either vote against or abstain– former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, Makis Voridis, Thanos Plevris, Yiannis Kefalogiannis, Euripides Stylianidis, Charalambos Athanasiou, Anna Karamanlis, Kostas Karagounis, Vassilis Giogiakas, Miltos Chrysomallis, Pericles Mantas, Charalambos Athanasiou, Andreas Katsaniotis and Thanasis Davakis.

Christos Kellas, Andreas Katsaniotis, Stratos Simopoulos, Theodoros Karaoglou, Kostas Gioulekas, Notis Mitarakis, Stefanos Gikas, Nikos Vlachakos, Maximos Charakopoulos and Stefanos Gikas also oppose the proposal, Kostas Vlassis, George Karasmanis, George Georgantas, Christos Boukoros, Kostas Katsafados, Dimitris Kyriazidis, Anastasios Dimochakis, Marios Salmas, Yiannis Tragakis and so on.

In total, it is estimated that no less than fifty members of parliament have reservations and objections and have decided not to say yes. Some of them keep a low profile and appear to have the potential to fluctuate. This is the so-called gray areawhich includes some ministers such as Maria Kefala and some members of parliament such as Apostolos Vessiropoulos, Giannis Pappas, Giannis Andrianos, Marilena Soukoulis, Theophilos Leonardides, Takis Theodorikakos, Christos Dermendzopoulos, Michalis Papadopoulos, Christodoulos Stephanadis and others.

Based on the above, it becomes absolutely clear that the bill on civil marriage for same-sex couples will be adopted not by the government majority, but with the help of opposition deputies.

But even in SYRIZA, where – supposedly – the issue of same-sex marriage is a matter of identity and, in any case, the constant and long-standing position of all Kumunduru members, things are not at all rosy. This comes as senior officials express reservations on the issue of childbearing, despite the party’s entire parliamentary group having signed up to a proposal for legislation that is clearly more advanced, including surrogate pregnancies, while references are also made to “Parent 1” and “Parent 2”. However, already now the MP from the Northern Sector, Athena Linou, has shown concern about this issue, saying that “I believe that this is the same thing, and that it is necessary to do to protect the freedom of people, and especially to protect children”. She was ahead of her by the MP from Magnesia, Alexandros Meikopoulos, who spoke out against childbearing.

As for Georgios Tsipras (brother of the former leader of Syriza), he, like perhaps other deputies, said that he was concerned about the issue of surrogacy even within the framework of existing legislation. Pavlos Polakis did not voice his concerns about the bill, explaining that he could not support it in the mountain villages of Crete, where he lives. In any case, it is expected that, despite disagreements and objections, there will be no widespread differentiation within SYRIZA.

“Massage” and on X. Trikoupis

This does not apply to the Green faction, as there were several strong disagreements with the main voting line for the same-sex marriage bill. Every day the number of deputies who are from extremely concerned to confident that they will vote against is growing, as they have made clear to their interlocutors and colleagues.

According to reports, the number of PASOK MPs who have spoken out against same-sex marriage is now 12. These are two Muslim deputies Ahmet Ilhan and Baran Burhan, deputy speaker of parliament Odysseus Konstantinopoulos, originally from Arcadia, and secretary of the parliamentary group Evangelia Liakoulis, islanders Stavros Michaelides, Panagiotis Paraskevaides, Freddy Parasiris, Manolis Khnaris and Eleni Vatsina, as well as Tasos Nikolaidis, Andreas Poulas and Apostle Pan. It means that more than a third of PASOK deputies do not agree with the bill. Of these, at least five or six people, as a matter of course, won’t vote for himand one can only guess what… problematic ones will do.

“Massage” of deputies will take place next week, during a meeting of the parliamentary group, when everyone’s intentions will become clear. However, during a teleconference last week, Nikos Androulakis advised MPs to be careful in their positions, insisting that PASOK was in favor of same-sex marriage but was awaiting the final text.

Supported by the opposition

A controversial bill based on all of the above will receive an increased majority, but this will happen thanks to the support of SYRIZA and PASOK. But even if for some reason these two parties back down, the bill could still pass, even without 151 votes. Because, according to the Constitution and the Rules of the House, the bill is adopted by a majority of those present, which cannot be less than 75 deputies. That is, if deputies abstain en masse, the bill could be passed by a quarter of the chamber, which, of course, is an extreme scenario.

It has happened many times in the past that a bill passed with fewer than 151 votes. Thus, in 2017, a controversial article allowing legal recognition of gender identity from the age of 15 was adopted by 148 votes.

It is worth noting that the manual EUare already growling menacingly at Greece, comparing Mitsotakis with Orban, and calling him a dictator, since Greece has not yet legalized the marriages of LGBT couples, and also has not adopted a law on the adoption of minor children by LGBT couples.

The EU leadership, represented by Ukrusa von der Leyen, has already done opaque hints to Kyriakos Mitsotakis and promised to impose sanctions against “slow” Greeks, and the European Parliament complains about the insufficiently liberal Greek authorities, remembering her, questions about freedom of speech, the spy scandal and other problems…
