Natural gas consumption in 2023 decreased by 21.56% compared to the previous year, the Greek gas transmission system operator (DESFA) said in a report:
- Total natural gas demand in 2023 fell to 67.60 terawatt-hours (TWh) from 86.18 TWh in 2022.
- Domestic consumption fell by 10.13% to 50.91 TWh, and exports fell by 43.48% to 16.69 TWh.
- Imports of natural gas in 2023 will amount to 67.71 TWh, which is 21.41% less than in 2022.
The largest consumers of natural gas were power plants (67.84%), followed by households (21.98%).
The Revitus terminal in the Saronic Gulf remains the country’s main natural gas import point. Revitusa accounted for 43.55% of imports (41 LNG tankers with 28.52 TWh of LNG from 7 countries). This is followed by the Sidirokastro terminal in northern Greece, through which Russian pipeline gas is imported. Last year it accounted for 34.6% of imports (23.43 TWh). Shipments decreased by 20.82% compared to 2022.
Largest LNG importer for Greece remains the USA (10.75 TWh and a market share of 37.69%), followed by Russia (8.38 TWh), Egypt (3.5 TWh), Algeria (3.47 TWh), Norway (0.97 TWh), Nigeria (0.94 TWh) and Spain (0.51 TWh). Russian pipeline gas, which is imported to Greece through a hub in Sidirokastro, accounted for 34.6% of imports last year (23.43 TWh). Shipments decreased by 20.82% compared to 2022.
