Energy suppliers are demanding the return of subsidies that were awarded as electricity grants to the country’s 1.25 million small and medium-sized enterprises after they were vetoed by the European Commission.
In April 2022, Kostas Skrekas, then Minister of Energy, announced electricity subsidies that applied to small and medium-sized enterprises with a capacity of up to 35 kVA, such as small restaurants, kiosks, hairdressers, bakeries. The announcement affected 1.25 million businesses and was effective retroactively to January 2022 through December 2022.
Due to the difficult situation due to price indexation and the reaction it caused in society, the Ministry of Environmental Protection did not wait for the approval of this measure by the commission.
At the end of 2022, the European Commission approved subsidies for ten rather than twelve months (from February 2022 to November 2022), and not in full, but with specific state aid ceilings. This has left a hole of around €500 million for providers, market participants say. So what do they do in this situation? They ask for the money back.
