Serres: alarm over new cases of African swine fever


African swine fever tends to assume alarming proportions as the disease is confirmed in animals in Serres following the latest cases detected in Drama.

In particular, on January 15, 2024, an outbreak of the disease in wild boar was confirmed by the National Reference Laboratory for African Swine Fever (ASF) inscription ικών Νοσημάτων) in the village of Lagadi of the municipality of Visaltia, regional unit Serres.

A few days earlier, on January 11, 2024, an outbreak was declared among domestic pigs on two farms in Pagoneri, in the municipality of Kato Nevrokopi, regional unit of Drama. The specific units are located in the restricted area I (Απαγορευμένη Ζώνη I) and consist of 174 pigs (6 boars, 116 sows and 52 finishing pigs).

A new case of African swine fever in wild boar was detected near the Greek-Bulgarian border on January 16, 2024. HThe European Commission’s ADIS system has reported seven secondary outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) among wild boar in Bulgaria, including in the Haskovo (1), Kardzhali (1) and Smolyan (5) regions. In Bulgaria, from 01/01/2024 to 01/16/2024, 96 outbreaks were detected among wild boars.

In order to prevent further spread of the disease, the Department of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases of the Ministry of Health and Human Services draws special attention to the competent veterinary authorities of all regional divisions of the country to conscientiously implement the necessary measures. The importance of passive surveillance and early detection of a dangerous disease is emphasized.
