On the other hand, important indicators were recorded in the Ionian Islands, which in 2022 became leaders by average spending on a visit to Greece (with a significant double-digit increase of 31% compared to 2019). The amount reached 821 euros. On the contrary, the region with lowest tourist income throughout the country is Western Macedonia (total 49 million euros), while Epirus recorded the most low average cost per visit (240 euros).

In terms of shares of inbound tourism visits, the South Aegean region remains the “champion”, considering that with 6.7 million visits it accounts for more than 1/5 (21%) of the total. In addition, the region of Central Macedonia, with a share of 18% (almost the same as Attica) and 5.6 million visits, maintains a high percentage due to road tourism. On the other hand, the share of visitors to the northern Aegean Sea, as well as the region of Western Macedonia, is minimal – 1%.

Regarding data about quality in the accommodation sectorOverall, Greece has a very high level of customer satisfaction with its hotels: The overall GRI satisfaction index based on relevant surveys is 87%.

Of the country’s 13 regions, two have a score of over 90%: Epirus (90.8%) and the Cyclades (90.2%), while Attica and the Ionian Islands have a comparatively low score of 85% and 84.5% respectively.

The cultural wealth of the country with its ancient and modern resourcesas well as opportunities for further development of Greek destinations are reflected in the corresponding plans of all regions.

There are 867 traditional settlements in Greece, most of them located in the Cyclades (163), Peloponnese (149), Crete (99) and the Ionian Islands (84).

INSETE reports, among other things, include data on the physical and socio-economic environment of each region, its tourism resources, the size of the tourism economy and employment, key figures and indicators of inbound tourism (arrivals, overnight stays, admissions, occupancy, etc.), air , sea and road connections, visits to museums and archaeological sites, tourism infrastructure and key performance indicators and hotel ratings.

Mr. Ilias Kikilias, CEO of INSETE, said: “Greece has a strong tourism product with great diversity and development potential. INSETE, with annual reports of the regions in combination with the study “Greek Tourism 2030/Action Plan” provides regions, agencies and all stakeholders with tools and data to develop targeted development strategies. Through our proposals we aim to mitigate seasonality, spatially expand tourism activities in potential areas, and increase average spend and length of visitor stay. At the same time, for a balanced development that will benefit permanent residents and at the same time contribute to the creation of a competitive tourism experience, a holistic approach to destinations is needed, based on local specifics and the necessary infrastructure investments
