Derussification started in Kazakhstan

The de-Russification campaign has begun in Kazakhstan – renaming and changing the alphabet are coming.

How reports BB.LV publication, The Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan plans to rename the Russian-language names of railway stations – the order has already been published on the official portal legal information of the republic.

In accordance with the document, the department proposes, in particular, to change the name of the Uralsk station to Oral. The Ministry of Transport also proposed to rename the Astana station, which bears the name of Nursultan Nazarbayev. Public discussions of the initiative will continue until January 22.

Earlier, the head of the Ulytau region of the country, Berik Abdygaliuly, proposed replacing the Soviet names of the regions with historical ones: the West Kazakhstan region could be renamed the Akzhayik region, and the East Kazakhstan region – the Altai region.

It is also planned to transfer the alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin. Kazakh linguists have completed the main work for the transition to Latin graphics, in order to replace Cyrillic letters with Latin ones. According to the government’s plan, the process will begin this year.
