Welcome to the Olympics in Paris: hotel prices have tripled

7 months before the start of the Olympic Games, hotel owners are trying to make the most of the situation – hotel prices in the French capital have already tripled, and this is not the limit.

euronews leads data from a study conducted by the consumer protection association UFC-Que Choisir. There are less than seven months left before the Olympic Games, and hotel prices in Paris have already tripled during the Games.

This is stated in a study conducted by the consumer protection association UFC-Que Choisir. Not every tourist can afford even the most modest hotels in Paris. And every month the situation will only get worse. Experts say that as the Olympics approach, prices will continue to rise and could easily reach 500%.

“We’re glad we came to Paris now, because we definitely won’t come during the Olympics,” says a tourist walking around the French capital. Another woman echoes her: “I won’t come to the Olympics because the prices are too high.”

Taking advantage of the popularity of the Olympic Games, hoteliers are trying to make the most of it. Charlene Pelletier, owner of the Hôtel du Muguet, says:

“During a normal period, the average price for a standard room is 330 euros, and at the beginning of the Olympic Games, around July 26, it rose to 530 euros. I have to catch up with my competitors in the area. This is an exceptional event, so we are also trying to benefit the most out of it.”

French authorities plan to inspect 10,000 hotels and restaurants across the country to curb massive price increases. It is expected that 16 million tourists will visit the French capital during the Olympic Games.
