South Korea: Bloody attack on opposition leader


Lee Jae-man was stabbed in the neck while the leader of the opposition Democratic Party of South Korea was on a visit to the southern port city of Busan.

By message Yonhap publication, an unknown person aged 50-60 attacked him while inspecting the construction site of a new airport on Gadeok Island in Busan. The suspect, posing as a fan of the politician, approached him asking for an autograph, and then attacked him with an unidentified weapon 20-30 centimeters long, probably a knife.

Law enforcement officers detained the criminal at the scene. The politician was transferred to Busan National University Hospital about 20 minutes after the attack. At the time of transport, Lee remained conscious, but the bleeding continued.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yol expressed deep concern for the safety of Lee Jae-myung, ordering the police and relevant authorities to quickly establish the facts and make every effort to quickly transport the victim to the hospital. Yoon stressed that such violence should never be tolerated under any circumstances.
