On the first day of 2024, temperatures in Greece were recorded at seasonally high levels. The weather outside was more reminiscent of spring than winter.
Temperatures reached +19°C in Athens and +14°C in Thessaloniki, according to meteorologist Nikos Kanteres, former director of the National Meteorological Service. “Despite the fact that the thermometer showed high temperatures for the season, they still cannot be compared, for example, with the weather on New Year’s Day 2010, when +22°C was recorded in Athens and +30°C in Heraklion on Crete,” – says Mr. Canderes.
“From next Saturday (6/1) and especially from Sunday (7/1) the first weather change is likely to arrive from the western and central Mediterranean, bringing with it rain and wind. Although this will not significantly change the overall weather picture. On Monday the situation will stabilize, but from Tuesday (9/01) we expect rain again in some parts of the country,” notes Mr. Canderes, answering a related question regarding the first weather change of the new year. He adds: “At the moment, meteorological data shows that the first cold invasion in 2024 will occur on January 14-15. If the forecast model is confirmed, we expect snowfall in the mountains, in Northern Greece, possibly even at lower altitudes.”
