The Japan Meteorological Agency reported earthquakes off the coast of Ishikawa and nearby prefectures, with one measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale.
The outbreak was located in the northeastern region. The agency issued a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa and a lower level tsunami warning for the rest of the west coast of Honshu. reports euronews.
Public broadcaster NHK warned that waves could reach heights of up to 5 meters and urged people to evacuate to higher ground or rooftops as quickly as possible.
A tsunami of about 3 meters in height is expected to hit Niigata and other prefectures on Japan’s west coast. According to NHK, small tsunami waves have already been confirmed to have reached the coastline.
The government will hold a press conference later in the day. Reports of destruction were not immediately available.
